A few days ago John and I were contacted by the “Dallas Observer.” They were writing an article on counter culture and wanted to ask us about the swinger lifestyle.

The “Observer” also wanted to send over a photographer to take a few pictures of John and I for the story. After exchanging texts with the photographer, we scheduled an appointment. The day of the photo shoot was fantastic! John and I had so much fun talking with the photographer about everything from our travels to our kids and grandkids! It wasn’t until after he had left and I was working in my office that I noticed he had sent me a friend request on Facebook.

I happily accepted and was now privy to his feed. You can imagine my surprise when I noticed he had posted a comment just hours before arriving at our home that he was going to be photographing a swinger couple and what should he wear. The feed was hilarious!

He received countless suggestions—everything from, “Tear away pants and a crop top,” to “Latex!” It didn’t take long for me to bring the post to John’s attention. We both laughed and talked about how we wished we’d known about the post before he showed up. Boy, we could’ve really dressed in character!

Even though John and I had a good laugh over the endless comments, it did remind us of how stereotypical the word “swinging” can be. How could anyone involved in a relationship outside the lines of what society has deemed normal look, dress and behave normal? It can be much easier, I think, for society to picture a guy in bell bottom slacks with his shirt unbuttoned to his navel then to admit the typical swinger could just as easily be standing behind you in the grocery store.
